Without Sanctuary uncovers a horrific American visual legacy: photographs and postcards taken as souvenirs at lynchings throughout the United States 5000 Americans were lynched in the United States from the 1870s to the 1970s. Photography played a significant role in the ritual of torture facilitating the endless replay of trophy images; displayed bodies and smiling crowds. The photographs postcards and memorabilia featured in the exhibition are shown in the UK for the first time.”
