Upper Clapton Macaroni
Photo from Wikipedia
According to wikipedia this print of an Upper Clapton Macaroni lives in Sutton House and is dated as 1772 There is a little more info on this Sutton House newsletter which suggests it’s short for Macaroni penguins (a penguin that looks like it’s wearing a feather). These were fashionable young (rich) men who had completed their grand tour so had European influenced styles and considered themselves the height of fashion – it feels a little like we have come full circle! Does anyone know anything more? thanks to @cherkoff and @monkchips for the heads up on this.”
