CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOFThursday 8 March, 1pm Earning both Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor Oscar nominations, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, based on Tennessee Williams’ play, is the story of a southern American family in crisis. In the wake of a friend’s suicide, Brick (Newman) has turned to alcohol. His father is dying, his marriage is in disarray and his brother is attempting to steal his inheritance. Set on one fateful day in the bed-sitting room of a plantation house in the Mississippi Delta, Richard Brooks’ adaptation brings the absolute best out of an outstanding cast, whose deceptions, heartaches and fears are laid out with a tenderness that does great justice to Williams’ Pulitzer Prize winner. A STREETCAR NAMED DESIREThursday 12 April, 1pm Vivien Leigh, Karl Malden and Kim Hunter were all awarded Oscars opposite Marlon Brando (nominated) in Elia Kazan’s hothouse adaptation of the Tennessee Williams play which he had originally directed on Broadway. When the death of her husband reduces her circumstances, fading Southern belle Blanche Dubois is obliged to seek shelter with her sister’s in-laws in a tenement in New Orleans.Neurotic, wistful and desperately clinging to memories or fantasies of prosperity and refinement, her presence provokes uncontrollable tensions – especially with brutal, virile brother-in-law Stanley Kowalski.
