Best Pasteis de nata: Portuguese custard tarts, in Hackney?
@alexpink and I were in Lisbon last week we ate a lot of these and they are ace (particularly these ones from Belem) so I’d like to know where the best ones are in Hackney?
I did suggest to James at the Hackney Pearl that he start making them and he was thinking about it…. so we’ll have to wait for his.”

@ewebber I have seen these somewhere in ‘ackney, but can’t remember where for the moment. They have them in Fernandez & Wells if you’re ever over Oxford Circus way, really good coffee there too.
Emma and I are going to Lisbon in September so I might bend your ear at twee8 for any recommendations =)
ewebber
@goodlegs they are a common-ish site around London, I think they have them at Venetias – but I haven’t tried them, I know they have them in Palm2, I think my expectations have risen since the trip, so I’ll have to go round trying them all again!
We’ll tell you our tips next week 🙂

they rock in lisbon of course. believe it or not, the ones in nando’s aren’t at all bad! on brick lane a lot of the coffee shops sell them. also on broadway market saturday there are a couple of stalls. down near the canal end there are two men who sell them along with some great codfish cakes (mmmm) – but the prices are a bit stupid. (off-topic but the ones in toronto are on par with portugal.(

Nando’s in on my never visit list, I’ll have to try making my own!
londiner
Not terribly helpful but there are very nice ones at A Casa Portuguesa on C/Verdi in Gracia, Barcelona!
janice
well hey @ewebber …you asked where you could buy them! poor nando’s!
janice
where did you stay, e? we really want to go back but may try porto for a new experience…
ewebber
@janice as I’m a veggie, I think you’ll understand my Nando’s aversion!
We stayed in a flat on the edge of Barrio Alto, but not in the thick of the bars – really handy for getting around

I’m anti-Nandos just in an anti-identikit high street way.

Not seen or tried any in Hackney but I can recommend this little gem on the westside…Lisboa Patisserie, 55 Golborne Road, London W10 5NR
janice
thanks. I know there’s a Little Lisbon area in vauxhall too. i used to go have the tarts with a great coffee when I had a client over there. see http://www.madeiralondon.co.uk/Cafe/ViewCafe.aspx?Link=Cafe – but yeah NOT hackney.

@capriciouschan – shhh… I don’t want everyone to turn up and eat up all the best pasteis de nata in London…! No longer a secret, I know, especially since La McCartney moved to the street with a bunch of fashion girls in tow, but still amazing, cheap, and proper vintage! One of the rare places outside of Hackney where I travel to regularly (to stock buy my supply of coffee).

Another place that springs to mind is “little portugal” on the Stockwell Road between Brixton & Stockwell. A little past the skate park and Brixton Cycles. Look for the deli that has a cafe attached. If you say ‘please’ ‘hello’ or ‘thanks’ in Portuguese they sometimes give you some freebies to sample.
janice
that’s the one! stockwell road.

The ones from Camis Delicatessan on Stoke Newington Church Street are pretty good too.
irvine
Not the swankest destination in Hackney, Benfica on Dalston Lane is nonetheless very friendly, and 100% Portuguese. Had a couple of perfectly nice meals there, but haven’t yet tried the custard tarts
ewebber
@irvine ooh cool thanks, I’ll give them a go… once I am allowing myself to eat them again after all the ones I stuffed in my face last week!
I asked Abdul from Palm2 and he said he gets his from Smithfields Market, I don’t know anymore that than, but a Pasties de Nata and @jeromesk8 coffee sounds like a great plan 🙂
ewebber
and @sparrowsdesign – great that there are a few to try nearby
alexpink
I haven’t had one since Lisbon and I’m starting to get the shakes (cold turkey). I had a nice one from Venetias before Lisbon. Hopefully James at the Pearl will come up trumps.

Agree with @capriciouschan that the ones on Golborne Rd are the real deal and might well be the best in London – that place is amazing and worth the trip – but a bit closer to home I had a good one in Parioli on Lower Clapton Road recently.
@alexpink and @ewebber, having a big online catch-up and only just found your tweet saying that you were going to Portugal just after us. Glad you enjoyed the pasteis de nata too – not sure if we went a day without one the whole time we were there!
