Hackney Wick Overground Station Development

A few weeks ago, the council announced plans for an £8.5 million project to upgrade Hackney Wick Station – http://news.hackney.gov.uk/8m-upgrade-for-hackney-wick-station/ Among other things, it’s said to be expected to create thousands of job opportunities for residents and up to 2,000 homes. Is this going to be as controversial as the Fashion Hub project, in that it’ll take business away from local shops and not really benefit local people? Is it just an example of gentrification rather than regeneration? Please let me know your thoughts.

  1. Hackney Wick and Fish Island planning is now under the control of the LLDC, not Hackney Council. I cant see how they will be a threat to locals (well, what locals there are, though obviously the artists are going to be priced out again). The real worry will be with landlords around Old Street and in Shoreditch, which will now have to compete with an area tailor made for new media and offering much lower rent around the iCity hub.

  2. @ellejournalist there is already a thread about this over here: http://www.yeahhackney.com/the-development-of-hackney-wick/ I’m closing this one, please add your comments over there.
