This is a fantastic thread, I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s odd to think there used to be so many in our borough when now all that really remains is the Rio in Dalston (happy to be corrected on that.Turning to future, what do people think about the opening of the Hackney Picture House in Mare Street this Autumn? It’s going to be in the building opposite the Town Hall currently called \Ocean” which was a scandalous waste of public money and is now hardly used. The Hackney Gazette reported in December:”THE Ocean Hackney Council’s white elephant music venue will be transformed into the Hackney Picturehouse after being leased by City Screen the Gazette can reveal. The independent cinema chain which runs the Stratford Clapham and Greenwich Picturehouses and the Ritzy in Brixton is planning to create four cinema screens and three bars in the venue a former library when it takes control of the building in January….Another feature of other cinemas in the chain is a range of membership options which give viewers discounts on films and drinks at the bar…Cinemagoers are kept up to date with weekly newsletters and direct mail.”I’m really excited about it – the Screen on the Green is a great cinema and I’ll definitely make that my first choice film-watching venue over Islington Genesis in Whitechapel or the West End. Just me?”

There is (of course) a thread on the Picture House over here: http://www.yeahhackney.com/groups/film-hackney/forum/topic/picture-house-in-hackney/As far as know Screen on the Green has nothing to do with City Screen. When I worked there it was owned by Mainline Cinemas who I think sold to Everyman a few years ago
