Free Abney Park Cemetery TOUR – First Sunday of Month 2pm
Hello everyone, Stoke Newington’s enchantingly wild Abney Park Cemetery is holding a new series of free walks, exploring Britain’s first non-denominational garden cemetery and arboretum. Built in 1840 and abandoned in the 70s, Abney Park was saved in the 80s by local activists. Now run by the Abney Park Trust, it is home to over 190,000 of London’s dead. The buried include William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, lion tamer Frank Bostock, nicknamed the ‘King of all Carnival Kings’, plus a myriad of other fascinating characters and revolutionary minds. In recent years it has become an extremely valuable nature reserve and a local cultural and educational hub, as well as a favourite location for film, TV and photoshoots, perhaps most memorably as in Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back to Black’ video. The walks are held on the first Sunday of every month at 2pm. Meet at the Egyptian entrance gates on Stoke Newington High Street. No booking required. The walks are free but donations to help the Trust’s work are warmly welcomed.
