  1. I saw the posters as I was going to work this morning. I think it’s a great idea to have the destinated BBQ area and I hope they reinforced the BBQ stands as well. People are totally destroying the grass in the park.

The area isn’t too big though, so people might have to fight for their spaces.

If somehow the council can also find ways to fine the litterers, that will totally make my day!!!!

  2. yeah, it feels like this isn’t necessarily the answer as people BBQ all over, maybe they need some BBQ drums for the summer

  3. I just did the survey. I pity the park rangers if they do have to try and enforce a ban – I can imagine that some people will be so obnoxious about it I’m sure.

  4. But the council is right to be at least looking into it though.

  5. The survey is a little black and white, it doesn’t really give any options, just should we do it or not.
I think it would be better if the council had some options, yes clearly something needs to be provided, but is this proposed BBQ area the best option?

  6. Don’t really agree with the idea of forcing barbecues into one small area, and even if I did then I don’t think it’s the right place – closer to the Pub on the Park and it would get the sun later in the evenings, be neaer to the toilets and (not insignificantly) to the pub. Insisting on stands for barbecues is a fine idea though.

  7. The space by POTP is a cricket pitch isn’t it?

I’m glad they’re exerting some control tbh. It’s so rare to see BBQs allowed in public spaces – most parks strictly ban it – but if it’s done right it leaves no mark and should be allowed.

But in London Fields the place is such a mess after a sunny day – why people can’t be bothered to pick up their own rubbish is beyond me. Very sad.

  8. POTP is too near the children’s playground, youth football and the cricket pitches. I think they destinate near the market side perhaps is easier access for fire trucks in case they need to ring one in?

Everytime I pass by the park at sunset during my run, my heart aches to see the sea of rubbish left behind! They’re probably too drunk but this is not an excuse, these are supposedly to be educated gentrified green-conscious people who buy organic sausages for their BBQs too!!

  9. This weekend we had lovely sunny weather, of course London Fields was HEAVING as usual. So, how did the destinated BBQ area working out?

    Saturday, 21 May 2011:

No of BBQs in Destinated BBQ area: 0
No of people in Destinated BBQ area: 0
No of BBQs in the non-destinated area: 8
No of people in the non-destinated area: 382 (approx)

I didn’t see any patrols about to move these people with BBQs to the destinated area. I think the problem is that the area just looked fenced off and there was no signage indicated that the fenced off area is the BBQ area other than the tiny posters at the park entrance.

    Utter fail.

  10. The fenced off area isn’t the BBQ area – it’s a wild flower area.

The BBq area is around the fenced off area.

  11. Ahhh okay that makes more sense.
