Can anyone help?
Can anyone help with this picture. It’s of my late father about 1930 taken by the local newspaper at the site of the new traffic signals in Stoke Newington. I would like help to trace the newspaper to see if they still have the article on line, the exact location and date. It would be interesting to see the location today. Thanks in anticipation. Phil. “

@philly5696 The photo is too small for me to make out the building in the background. As for the ‘paper, I would have thought the Hackney Gazette (or Hackney & Stoke Newington Gazette as it used to be called) would be a good guess.http://www.hackneygazette.co.uk/contact-ushttp://www.britishpapers.co.uk/england-london/hackney-gazette/Good luck.”

Thanks for the reply benjamin, perhaps this link will show it larger. I will have a look at the other sites you have mentioned tomorrow… thanks again.http://s712.photobucket.com/albums/ww127/fartypants_01/Stoke%20Newington/?action=view¤t=dad.jpg

@philly5696 OK, I’m not 100% on this but I reckon the building in the background is on the corner of Cazenove Road N16. So, If I’m correct, your father would be standing roughly outside the gates of Abney Park Cemetery.http://www.picturesofengland.com/England/Greater_London/Stoke_Newington/pictures/1110547I may be wrong though.”

I believe Benjamin is correct and this was my first impression: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=stoke+newington&hl=en&ll=51.563326,-0.07323&spn=0.002825,0.007966&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=22.087036,65.258789&vpsrc=6&hnear=Stoke+Newington,+Greater+London,+United+Kingdom&t=m&z=18&layer=c&cbll=51.5635,-0.073191&panoid=5qmYTVbhCSujpzSsLs_MFA&cbp=12,17.8,,0,10.67 The building behind the 476 in the Street View would be my guess as well.

The corner building in the background used to be called The Weavers Arms. Here’s a pic from way back when the other buildings were intact;http://deadpubs.co.uk/LondonPubs/Hackney/WeaversArms.shtml“

Hi Phil, I’m a trainee journalist currently doing work experience at the Hackney Gazette. I don’t work in the archives/subscription side of things I’m afraid so don’t think I’ll much help there but I was wondering what the story was behind you trying to find the article now and if you knew why your father had been featured in the paper in the first place? If you’d prefer to email me my address is lauramackenzie25@gmail.com. It would be great to hear from you. Thank youLaura”
