AXIS OF AFRO: AFRICAN SCREEN CONTEST + Mozambiquan Fusion Quartet

WED 18th APRIL. Doors 7.00. Film 7.30/8. £5 / £4 Concs / £3 Members

We’re shining the light onto Mozambique on the southeastern side of the continent for our third African Screen Contest excursion with another musically themed film. Karen Boswall’s “Marrabentando: The stories my guitar sings” (2005 52mins) follows two old Mozambican Marrabenta musicians on a South African tour with the well-known hip-hop fusion band Mabulu. They tell fascinating tales of their lives through their music and so cover key parts of Mozambican history from the 1930s to the present day. An accompanying 12min short then tells of a very special road trip on an old Ford flatbed truck converted into a mobile cinema and stage taking the film on a tour of southern Mozambique to bring live music and cinema to the rural population in the region for the first time.

Plus AoA present a traditional Mozambiquan quartet who have grown to fuse their roots with the diverse styles the world has to offer set to perform as part of this special evening. As always DJ Africathy has handpicked the sweetest tunes this time from Mozambique and the Southern African regions so come prepared to watch listen and dance!
