Airplane noise in hackney

Does anyone else think that noise from low flying planes has really increased over the last few months. It seems like in the mornings and evenings, it’s almost one plane a minute and the noise levels are pretty significant.I’ve seen stuff online on the HACAN website talking about East London, but can’t find if anything has changed very recently. It’s really becoming quite an issue, I think.Interested to hear if anyone else notices the noise…

  1. I haven’t noticed any more noise from planes – I find the constant night helicopters more of an annoyance.

  2. Yes, I’m really noticing it here in Homerton. I can really see the details on the planes they’re so low. It’s almost constant today. I’m trying to see if there is anything online about new flight paths – or if it’s yet another inconvenience of the Olympics…..but nothing seems clear. It’s not shaking windows or anything, but it’s definately noticeable and I imagine just the thin end of the wedge.

  5. Anyone have any thoughts on how the proposal to turn Stansted into a 4 runway mega-hub airport to replace Heathrow would affect Hackney (environmentally and economically)?http://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/build-4runway-megahub-at-stansted-airport-8220619.html

  6. Well it would probably make for more noise (though ironically the traffic immediately over Hackney is the Heathrow approach). I’d be most concerned personally about the fact that Clapton rail station would probably have to close unless the line was double tracked both ways given the extra trains to and from Stanstead. But to be frank, the way this government is treating the issue, I’ll probably be retired and living somewhere else before anything finally gets built.

  7. The ES article states that they’d build  \a new Crossrail link from Stansted to Stratford reducing train journey times to 25 minutes.” But I see what you mean about the direct line to Liverpool St.Could they extend any future Crossrail2 as far as Stansted?I think it would be completely transformative to NE London (and obviously Essex) and in the long term might even change London’s centre of economic activity from west to east.”

  8. If they wanted to build a 25 minute rail link into Liverpool street they’d have to lay out a line solely for it, or lose all the intermediate stations. At the moment even the quick service is 45 minutes. In which case it couldnt really be part of Crossrail, it would have to be specific. Stanstead is much further out of central London than Heaathrow is. It cant be integrated like that.

  9. Here’s another article on the proposal http://www.architectsjournal.co.uk/news/daily-news/uk-airport-debate-is-taking-crossrail-to-stansted-the-answer/8637290.article You can see on that that the proposed extension to Crossrail would go through Stratford and out to Stansted on what appears to be an entirely new track. The service would have to be direct to Stansted to make that 25 minute journey feasible. It doesnt really look anything like Crossrail 2 which like Crossrail 1 will likely have numerous intermediate stops between outer London and the centre. “

  10. Not keen on Clapton Station closing just to have quicker journeys to Stansted Airport – it is an important station locally.

  11. Like Marty, I’m more irritated by the constant helicopter overflights.  I live on a boat on the canal/River Lea and I find it amazing how often the Police helicopter needs to be overhead even at such times as a Sunday morning.  I could justify this to some extent during the Olympics but it seems to be continuing and for some odd reason they seem to love buzzing/hovering over the boats for extended periods.
