Registration is open for the Hackney Wick Food Assembly

The Food Assembly has been a huge success in France and Belgium so far. Over 500 assemblies have been set up: small and large, in cities and in the countryside, these assemblies take place in a wide range of venues: restaurants, pubs, cultural centres, leisure centres, schools, libraries, coworking spaces, shops, churches, community centres … and much more! Each Assembly is a meeting place mixing a great variety of people : young and old, families and singles, rural and urban.

And now it’s time to see how the UK, Spain and Germany will like buying truly local produce online, and collecting from a venue within their community. The first one being in Hackney Wick!

**********************************

So what is the Food Assembly model?

**********************************

It’s simple:

1) Local producers put up their produce onto the Food Assembly website
2) Members of the local area buy their produce. Any questions can be sent directly to the producers.
3) If the minimum total order for that producer is met, they travel down at the same, weekly time and hand over their food.

Each Assembly has a ‘host’ and some volunteers who bring everything together: the producers, the venue and yourselves. I’m Massimo and I’m the host for Hackney Wick.

Why should I be interested?

**********************************

Well, by wanting to shop through your local Food Assembly, you will allow these things to happen:

1) You are buying directly from the people who grow your food. This means that these producers take away a much higher percentage of sales and also save time. Farmers are busy people growing fresh food, spending time with their family and hopefully finding some free time! You’re helping all of this. And preventing chain supermarkets from squeezing them out and making them work even harder.

2) You will get to meet these producers! Instead of a market being one that is more transactional, as you have pre-paid for your produce online, all that you need to do now is come and pick up your bags and have a chat with those who made them. We know our doctors, dentist, teachers, and now you’ll know who makes one of the most important things that keep you alive.

**********************************

So when can we shop in Hackney Wick!?

**********************************

Very soon! But firstly, two things need to happen. One is that we need 100 members to register for the Assembly to go live. Just click here to join and tell your housemates, co-workers and friends: https://thefoodassembly.com/en/assemblies/84.

Secondly, we had to find a venue that was willing to host one of the first Food Assemblies in the UK. It is a great chance for members of the local community to know about that particular venue and the various things they do, as you can see from the above photos. It can be hugely beneficial having so many people walk through their doors. +

**********************************

So where will it be hosted in Hackney Wick?

**********************************
It will be hosted at Number 90 Restaurant on Wallis Road every Tuesday from 6-8pm

**********************************

So what’s next?

**********************************

As well as getting members of and around Hackney to sign up, the next stage is getting more producers to come on board! We have a few so far, but we are looking for a few more so that we can sell, at the least, fruit, veg, bread, dairy, meat. As time goes on and things grow, more and more wonderful, local goods will be for sale. I really want local wine, honey, fish and juices to be available. We’re working hard on it!

So what are you waiting for! Just click here to join: https://thefoodassembly.com/en/assemblies/84
