RUBY & THE VINES + BUMI THOMAS

Fronted by vocalist/bassist Binisa Bonner, RATV fuse influences as diverse as Jazz, Rock, Afro-beat and Reggae. The line-up is completed by guitarist Greg Sanders and drummer Ben Assiter, who complement Binisa’s soulful, frank vocal delivery and deftly melodic bass lines with a meticulous groove. They released their debut EP ‘Red Storm’ in June 2011, achieving national airplay on BBC Radio by Gilles Peterson, Don Letts and Tom Robinson and were hotly tipped by Max Reinhardt (BBC) as a ”wild, hot and about to happen new trio”. BUMI is a dynamic contemporary African, acoustic Jazz-Folk-Soul singer-songwriter whose style is inspired by her multicultural heritage. Her music explores identity, sensuality, spirituality, retrospective and cross-culturism. In 2011 Bumi received the Womatt Best of British (BOB) Award for Best Solo Newcomer 2011 and was nominated for two BEFFTA awards “Best Female Act” and “Best Female Uk Based Afro-Caribbean Act”. Both powerful ladies, both playing with full band, and both ready to blow your music-seeking mind.

    HACKNEY COLLIERY BAND

Formed in 2008 out of a desire to play music that appealed to the feet as much as to the ears, the Hackney Colliery Band is east London’s unique take on the brass band. Featuring trumpets, trombones, saxes, sousaphone and marching percussion, the band are totally acoustic and yet able to blow the roof off any room. Hackney Colliery Band’s members have hugely diverse musical backgrounds, ranging from work with cutting edge jazz groups to the Bollywood Brass Band, and from Jarvis Cocker to major orchestras. This is clearly on display in their eclectic repertoire. Mining nuggets of Funk, Hip-Hop and Rock from the musical coalface and throwing in a few chunks of Balkan brass, Ska and contemporary Jazz for good measure, the Hackney Colliery Band’s setlist is as diverse as the London borough that gave them their name. With DJ Volta45 with the ultimate brass collection on the decks plus more special guests just firming up and lining up to be on the bill…

IN IT TO SWING IT! Feat TOP SHELF JAZZ
It’s not just about the bunting, not just about the bow-ties and flapper dresses you can don, or the gin available at the bar, or the swingin visuals, plentiful dance space… marvelous people and ridiculous kickin’ band!!…. oh wait… yes it is… it’s ALL about those things!

Direct from Lucifer’s drinks cabinet, a band whose original tunes are so distinctive and licentious that they spawned their own delectable style: ‘Filthy Swing’.  Devout fans know the ‘Jazz Age’ never finished and that Gatsby lives on! Born in the dark cabaret dens of Europe, the inimitable style and rakish banter of Top Shelf Jazz make them a most notorious and revered band. You will be driven to drink and dance with wild abandon. SKEPTICS IN THE PUB: The “Sharks Don’t Get Cancer” Myth
    SPEAKER: Ben Hardwidge
According to some nutritionists and practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine, sharks don’t get cancer. It’s a myth that’s not only brought false hope to sufferers of one of the world’s horrific diseases, who are told that consuming shark cartilage can cure cancer, but it’s also had a devastating impact on the world’s shark populations. In this talk, our resident marine conservation enthusiast Ben Hardwidge will explore the theories behind using medicines derived from sharks and rays, and explain the devastating impact that this is having on our marine ecosystem. He will also introduce the ideas behind a new scepticism campaign in development, which aims to raise awareness about medicines based on shark cartilage…
